About Us
|
|
Stephen Memorial, with the help of the Mahaska Humane Society, cares for over 1,000 animals per year. We also provide animal control for the City of Oskaloosa, rural Mahaska County and smaller municipalities that have signed contracts with SMAS.
Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter is the place to look for your new companion. All of our animals that are adopted will be spayed/neutered, have 1st shots, worming and a micro-chip prior to going to their new home. Dogs are tested for Heartworms; cats/kittens are given a Fel/leuk test. All of our animals are treated with Frontline to prevent fleas and ticks. All dogs are given a temperament evaluation prior to being placed on the adoption floor.
Mission Statement
Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter and the Mahaska Humane Society's mission is to promote the humane treatment of all animals, prevent cruelty and neglect to animals by providing the needed education to everyone to enhance the human-animal bond and to put an end to over population through an aggressive spay/neuter campaign. To reach a time when we will no longer be needed.
Vision Statement
Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter and the Mahaska Humane Society envision a time when our community understands and celebrates the human-animal bond, enjoys the mutual benefits of a companion animal and will become the only place humans look for companion animals. Our community will become a place were pets are not strays or unwanted and Mahaska County becomes a model for achieving a "Humane Society".

Letter
from the Director

Now is the time to think about altering your pet. The Mahaska Humane Society and Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter have programs available that will either pay for part or even all of the cost of spaying or neutering your pet. The catch, you ask? All pets must be current on vaccinations as required by Iowa Code 351.33, the pet's owner must be a resident of Mahaska County, and proof of that, as well as proof of income must be shown. There is no excuse for not having your animal spayed or neutered, and the big news...you are saving lives!
Designer dog you say? Designer dogs are mixed breed dogs with a title! Think about it, shelters across the U.S. have been full of mixed breeds for years, as well as many wonderful "purebreds".
Before buying from a backyard breeder, puppy mill or puppy store think about the wonderful animals available at the local animal shelter.
People ask us all the time "What is wrong with that dog/cat". NOTHING! Animals come to our shelter due to their owners. Very seldom is it because the dog moved and can't take the owners, very seldom is it because the dog wanted new owners, very seldom is it that the owner's "shed" too much. The staff could tell lots of stories and excuses, with the worse being that the owner bought new furniture and the cat "no longer matched". Yes, it was said.
Before bringing a new pet into your home, do a little research and decide if the new pet is a good match. Not realizing that a Pointer likes to hunt is not the dog's fault. Think about the breed before getting your next animal. Most of all make Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter your first stop for your new family member.
