Can't Adopt?

Consider Donating!

Interested in adopting a new best friend? There is an adoption application to submit at least 24 hours prior to adoption (waiting period may be waived at the Director's discretion). If you live out of town we highly recommend submitting an application to us online before you make your trip to visit. To access our application online, please use one of the links below to download either a .PDF or Word version of the application. (If you send it by email, don't worry about the signature line.) We are usually able to contact adopters the morning after we receive your application.

Completing an application does not obligate you to adopt; it just puts you next in line for that particular pet. We place temporary "holds" on pets based on the order of applications received. (Please understand that we try to give every pet every chance for a good home and are in constant need of kennel space; therefore, we cannot normally "hold" a pet for longer than 24 hours.) If you have any questions, please call. Thank you very much for choosing the adoption option!

Adoption Fees

Adult Dogs over 9 months $100*
Senor Dogs over 5 yrs. $ 80
Puppies under 9 months $125*

*Purebred dogs and puppies may be part of our "Leave a Legacy" program. Because these dogs are highly desirable and are adopted very quickly, a higher adoption fee is charged to help offset the cost of caring for those dogs that have been waiting for adoptive families for longer periods of time. If a dog is part of the Leave a Legacy program a note will be made on their kennel card on on their description.

Adult cats over 1 year: Adoption fee waived if adopter brings in a donation from our wishlist
"Teenage" cats between 6 months and 11 months: $40.00
Kittens under 6 months $85

Remember all animals get the following prior to going to their new family.

Dogs: 1st shots, worming, heartworm test, Heartguard, Frontline, Bordetella, Micro-Chip with registration and of course, they are spayed or neutered. Dogs are also given a temperament evaluation.

Cats: 1st shots, worming, Feline Leukimia/FIV Combo test, Frontline, Micro-Chip with registration and they are spayed or neutered.

***All pets are also sent to their new home with any PetMeds if they are being treated for any ailments that may require medicine.***

Adoption is still a "deal" compared to getting a free animal; then paying for all of the services we include in the adoption fee. The best news is that you are saving lives and giving a wonderful animal a new lease on life.

Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter is full of wonderful dogs and cats; many of them purebreds and all of our animals are "Designer". Stop in and visit us today. You can also see our pets on or

The Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter is a non-profit animal shelter for homeless pets. We are located in Oskaloosa, IA, just outside of the city limits. We house, feed, and care for over 1000 animals each year. We are not just about dogs and cats anymore! We have had camels, llama's, goats, horses, birds and many other animals come through our doors in the last few years.
